Hands-Free Driving Law

A new driving law has gone into effect in Pennsylvania.  As of June 5, 2025, drivers in PA are banned from using any handheld mobile device while driving.  This includes making or receiving phone calls or accessing any apps including GPS or navigational apps.  If the navigational app is integrated into the vehicle that use is permitted; so, if your vehicle comes equipped with GPS or if you sync your phone to your car to be used hands-free.

The only exemption to the new law is if you are placing a call to law enforcement or other emergency service in an emergency event.

Even if you are stopped at a traffic light, stop sign or stuck in traffic you are still NOT permitted to use your mobile device.  Only if you safely pull off to the side of the road and stop are you permitted to use a handheld device.

The penalty for violating the new hands-free law is a written warning for the first year.  Starting June 5, 2026 the penalty is a summary offense with a $50 fine plus court costs and fees.

Distracted driving is a nationwide problem and Pennsylvania is just one of many states that has adopted more stringent laws to try to prevent distracted driving.  To avoid being pulled over and cited and eventually fined or worse, causing an accident, do yourself a favor and be sure to equip your car with hands-free technology or simply wait till you are out of your car before using your phone to make a call or text a friend.
