Do you Have the Class to Drive an RV or Motorhome? If you have plans to take the family on a road trip and are looking at an RV and/or motorhome, you may want to check to make sure your Pennsylvania non-commercial driver’s license will permit you to drive such a vehicle or you may be paying a hefty fine.

Pennsylvania has 4 classes of non-commercial driver’s licenses:

Class A is required to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the weight rating of the vehicle being towed is more than 10,000 pounds. The driver must be 18 or older to obtain a Class A license. Some large RVs, motorhomes or 5th Wheels would require a Class A license.

Class B is required to operate any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the weight rating of the vehicle being towed is less than 10,000 pounds. The driver must be 18 or older to obtain a Class B license. Smaller camper van style motorhomes would require a Class B license.

Class C is required to operate vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 26,000 pounds except motorcycles. The driver must be 16 or older to obtain a Class C license. This is the most common driver’s license and the class required to drive a standard automobile.

Class M is required to operate a motorcycle. The driver must be 16 or older.

In 2020 Pennsylvania increased the fine for driving a vehicle with a license that does not have the proper class to a maximum of $200.00.

Before you head out on the road, check your license and the type of vehicle you will be driving so you can avoid a fine and can enjoy your trip!
